Astrophysics Undergraduate Certificate

Gain a comprehensive understanding of the cosmos with the Undergraduate Certificate in Astrophysics in Temple University’s College of Science and Technology. This 19-credit certificate program is designed for current undergraduate students interested in advancing their knowledge in the world of astrophysics.

Explore the core principles of astrophysics as well as the advancements and technological achievements made in recent years, including the James Webb Space Telescope and advanced black hole imaging. You’ll have the opportunity to build and design tools at the Duckworth Scholars Studio Makerspace and use them to observe and study celestial motions, cycles and mechanics.

Work directly with faculty members whose expertise includes big data analysis, dark matter studies and neutrino physics. Mentorship opportunities for undergraduate students include both formal undergraduate research and informal professional development.

Students enrolled in this undergraduate certificate program will

  • analyze the major experiments and measurements that led to our current understanding of stellar structure, stellar evolution and big bang cosmology;

  • create and design instruments such as precise sundials used to observe astrophysical phenomena;

  • employ physical concepts in astronomical and astrophysical contexts to solve problems; and

  • use data sets in assignments and projects.
