Mission, Vision and Core Values

Mission

The Boyer College of Music and Dance is committed to nurturing talented students through its quality programs and by promoting Music and Dance as art forms, as media for human expression, and as subjects of intellectual inquiry. Recognizing that all the arts possess unique powers–to move the spirit, to excite the mind, to reveal the past, to celebrate the future, to instruct, to heal, to foster communication–the College seeks to advance Dance and Music in their myriad, interrelated forms through creative and scholarly work, teaching, and service, according to the highest academic and artistic standards of excellence. The College seeks to provide an inclusive educational community that honors the uniqueness of the individual, values diversity of perspective, and affirms Music and Dance as central to society and culture.

Vision

To fulfill its mission, the Boyer College must build on the long tradition of artistry and scholarship it has inherited, and marshal the potential resources and energy to advance the College's standing in the nation and the world by developing new insights, perspectives, and practices to enhance research, scholarship, and teaching. This dual objective–to explore both past and future, old and new–should be reflected broadly in the life of the College: in curriculum and instruction; institutional policy and planning; advisement and mentoring of students; professional work of faculty; and public performances and special events presented on-campus and in the community each academic year. For music and dance to remain vital our culture must not only develop highly trained artists and scholars, but must also cultivate informed and perceptive audiences as well.
