DUAL DEGREES

MD/PhD Program

MD/MA in Urban Bioethics Program

MD/MPH Program

MD/MBA Program

Temple University School of Medicine (TUSM) offers programs leading to “dual degrees.” Each program is arranged between the medical school and the related degree-granting school, thereby introducing scheduling efficiencies. The curricula of the dual degree programs are not integrated. Rather, students in dual degree programs will complete all curricular requirements of each program. Tuition is paid for the courses leading to each degree. Upon successful completion of each component of the program, the student will receive the degree specific to that component: MD, PhD, MPH, MBA or MA. Single MD/PhD, MD/MPH, MD/MBA, and MD/MA degrees are not awarded.

MD/PhD Program

If you want to become a physician-scientist, an excellent way to do it these days is to enroll in an MD/PhD program. The program is comprehensive, demanding and challenging, attracting bright, highly motivated individuals drawn to a research career in academic medicine. Temple’s MD/PhD program director says scientists with a medical background are in increasing demand at medical research centers because “they’re in the best position to ask the important questions about diseases and their origins and treatments.” For more detailed information about the MD/PhD Program, contact Dr. Soprano, Associate Dean for Graduate and MD/PhD Programs at 215-707-3976, or visit the program web site.

Applicants who apply to TUSM with a combined medical degree-PhD application are simultaneously considered for both the MD and PhD degree. The supplemental application contains additional questions specific to the PhD program. Complete applications are reviewed by both the PhD and MD programs. The interview day is integrated so that the MD and PhD interviews occur on the same day.  A student must first be accepted to the MD program before a decision is communicated from the PhD program. Typically three fellowships are awarded to incoming MD/PhD students each February.

MD/MPH Program

Students with a special interest in pursuing a dual MD/MPH degree need to submit a TUSM graduate application for the MPH program. Students who are interested in the MPH program can apply after acceptance to the School of Medicine up until October of the first year of medical school. TUSM will provide admissions documents for the MPH program to complete your application. The MCAT is used in lieu of GRE scores.

The dual program is coordinated such that one additional year of study is required to receive both MD and MPH degrees. Coursework for the MPH program begins in the spring of the first year of medical school. For more information on the MPH Program, visit the web site.
