About Our Program
Launched in 2008, the Temple University School of Medicine (TUSM) Postbaccalaureate Premedical Program has the unique distinction of offering guaranteed admission into Temple University School of Medicine (TUSM) upon successful completion of our one-year selective program, without a lag year. Housed at the School of Medicine, the Program includes an MCAT preparatory program, workshops, seminars and tutorials with TUSM faculty and students, as well as mentored clinical shadowing experiences. Our small class size enables us to advise and support you as you develop the key professional and academic strengths required for successful matriculation into our School of Medicine. Our mission is to attract, educate and train students to become outstanding medical students, residents and physicians who are thoroughly prepared to meet the world’s medical needs.
Since its beginning only four years ago, the Postbaccalaureate Premedical Program has enrolled 109 matriculants into medical school at TUSM. Our inaugural class of 17 students graduated TUSM in 2013 and have embark on their postgraduate training.
The TUSM Postbaccalaureate Premedical Program offers students a gateway into a career in medicine for those who either have an undergraduate degree in a non-science major, or have the degree and simply need additional classroom work and/or Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) preparation.
Students in each of these scenarios are deemed “career changers” or “career enhancers," respectively. For the “career changer," there is the Basic Core in Medical Science (BCMS) Postbaccalaureate Premedical Program. Students enroll in a 12-month, 34-credit-hour, non-degree program that provides premedical undergraduate science coursework in the College of Science and Technology.
The Advanced Core in Medical Science (ACMS) Postbaccalaureate Premedical Program meets the needs of “career enhancers” and offers rigorous graduate science coursework for those already close to gaining admittance into medical school. This track is a two-semester, 23-credit-hour, non-degree program.
In each case, TUSM is in a unique position to offer a challenging educational program, including premedical studies in the College of Science and Technology, graduate science classes at TUSM, seminars and tutorials with medical school faculty and students, and clinical encounters from shadowing at the hospital. Counseling and mentoring, integral to students' success, is provided by the Director, Grace Hershman. In addition, through early exposure to our medical school faculty, the students will experience integration into the fabric of TUSM. At the end of the Postbaccalaureate Premedical Program year, students who achieve a 3.5 GPA and a MCAT score of 30 with no score below 8 will matriculate to the MD Degree Program. For MCAT 2015, students must score in the 70th percentile.
Outcomes: At the end of the Postbaccalaureate year, successful students (those who achieve a 3.5 GPA and a MCAT score of 30 with no score below 8. For MCAT 2015, students must score in the 70th percentile.) matriculate to the MD Degree Program. To date, 92% have matriculated into TUSM, 6% have been accepted into other health professions and osteopathic medical schools, and 2% have returned to their previous careers.
