Temple reduces number of varsity sports

On Dec. 6, Temple announced it would reduce the number of intercollegiate athletic programs by seven, from 24 to 17, effective July 1, 2014. The sports affected include baseball, men´s crew, men´s gymnastics, men´s outdoor and indoor track and field, as well as two women´s sports: softball and rowing.

The action will mean a better and more sustainable experience for its remaining student‐athletes and bring Temple into line with most other schools in The American Athletic Conference; fellow members field between 16 and 19 varsity sports, except for the University of Connecticut, which has 24.

This announcement was made as the winter issue of Temple magazine went to press; as a result, the information was not available for inclusion in our print edition.

On Dec. 21, an op‐ed by President Neil D. Theobald appeared on Philly.com which explained the reasoning behind the decision..
