Students acquire skills to communicate in Russian on a variety of topics in predictable situations. Classroom work focuses on listening, speaking, reading and writing as students build their mastery of vocabulary and grammar. Emphasis on communication in a cultural context.

0052. Beginning Russian II (4-5 s.h.) F S. Core: LA.

Prerequisite: Russian 0051 or equivalent.

This course is in transition in 2006-2007: in the fall 2006 semester, for students who completed Ru 51 in spring 2006 or earlier, the course is 4 credits. In the spring 2007 semester, for students who completed Ru 51 in fall 2006, it is 5 credits. See the Russian advisor for more details.

Prerequisite: Russian 0052 or equivalent.

A continuation of the activities stressing communicative competence. Emphasis on vocabulary building, writing, and reading comprehension.

0062. Intermediate Russian II (3 s.h.) F S.

Prerequisite: Russian C061 or equivalent.

Intensive review of grammar with special attention to increasing vocabulary and idiomatic expressions.

0081. Russian Literature in English (3 s.h.)

A survey of selected masterpieces of Russian literature in English with emphasis on the influence of folklore.

Intensive work in spoken and written Russian needed by business executives and other travelers. Vocabulary, idiomatic usage and special terminology for professional needs. Cultural aspects, practice in personal contact and letter writing.

Readings of selected masterpieces by authors such as Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Turgenev, Pushkin, Leskov, Chekhov, Gorky, and Bunin. Analysis and discussion.
