Departmental Research
This degree is offered by the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences in Temple’s College of Public Health. PhD students can work closely with faculty mentors on a diverse range of public health research and evaluation projects, including sponsored studies in health promotion, disease prevention and health disparity reduction. Department faculty research emphases include
- cancer control and prevention,
- tobacco and other substance dependence prevention and treatment,
- chronic disease prevention,
- health communication,
- child and adult obesity and nutrition,
- HIV/AIDS,
- maternal and child health, and
- organ donation.

The College of Public Health contains several research centers, labs and programs associated with our public health disciplines. Labs involving faculty in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences who can serve as primary mentors to doctoral students include the
- Center for Obesity Research and Education;
- Health Behavior Research Clinic;
- Health Disparities Research Laboratory;
- Risk Communication Laboratory;
- Siminoff Research Group; and
- Social and Behavioral Health Intervention Laboratory.
Other labs associated with our public health disciplines include
- Behavioral and Cancer Epidemiology Research Program;
- Biostatistics Support Center;
- Fox Chase Cancer Center Cancer Prevention and Control Program;
- Water, Health and Applied Microbiology Lab; and
- Public Health Law Research Center.
In addition, faculty and doctoral students are involved in research with affiliates in the Fox Chase Cancer Center, the Beasley School of Law, the Lewis Katz School of Medicine, and other schools and colleges at Temple University.
