Biography

Dr. Krista Schroeder is a nurse scientist, educator, and clinician. Her research focuses on measuring, documenting, and addressing the impact of social determinants of health on health outcomes. For the last several years, her NIH/NICHD-funded studies have examined how social determinants of health impact populations who have been affected by traumatic experiences, such as violence or sexual assault. Her research leverages geospatial methods and large multilevel datasets to illuminate social determinants of health at both the individual and neighborhood levels. Dr. Schroeder’s science is complemented by a program of pedagogy and mentorship that advances students’ abilities to understand and address upstream causes of morbidity and mortality. Her research and teaching are directly informed by her experiences engaging with patients in North Philadelphia, where she maintains active clinical practice as an intensive care unit nurse and serves as an on-call sexual assault nurse examiner. Dr. Schroeder completed a BSN at Bloomsburg University, a PhD and NIH T32 pre-doctoral fellowship at Columbia University, a NIH T32 postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, and a graduate certificate at Temple University’s Department of Geography and Urban Studies. Currently, she is an associate professor of nursing (tenured) at Temple University College of Public Health.
