Temple University Community Gateway welcomes Shelbie Ulysse, violence prevention and community engagement coordinator, to Philadelphia from her hometown of Brooklyn, New York, with open arms. She comes to us with a background in training youth and their families on personal development and mental well-being while providing support in achieving their collegiate and professional pursuits. The motto “lifting as we climb” from the National Association of Colored Women has become a source of inspiration and motivation for Shelbie. It aligns with her drive to continue guiding people in their personal development journey and embracing their strengths to create a better life for themselves and their community.

Here at the Gateway, Shelbie creates and maintains the platform that houses the resources, services and programs that Temple and its partners offer to the community. This work is central to the Gateway’s mission of supporting residents in North Philadelphia and helping them reach their full potential and goals.

Shelbie is creating a database of programs, pedagogy and research, collaborating with representatives from Temple’s schools, colleges and administrative units who are responsible for regular contributions to the inventory database and capture outcomes. This comprehensive inventory will allow the university to disseminate information to raise awareness of our current activities and identify gaps in neighborhoods, schools, blocks and services.
