Professional Science Master's in Medical Dosimetry

Learn the physics, anatomy, and radiobiology required to help deliver cutting-edge radiation treatment care to patients with the Professional Science Master's in Medical Dosimetry in Temple University’s College of Science and Technology (CST). Open to students with a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field, this 30-credit Professional Science Master's (PSM) program will provide graduates with the necessary knowledge base and clinical experience to accurately generate radiation dose distributions and dose calculations and embark on successful careers.

Medical dosimetry is the science of calculating doses for patients who require radiation treatments. As a medical dosimetrist, you’ll work in collaboration with the radiation therapists, medical physicists and radiation oncologists to design, generate and measure radiation dose distributions while providing oversight to high-level treatment procedures.

Program Highlights

Led by scholars from faculty in the College of Science and Technology and Fox Chase Cancer Center, the Medical Dosimetry PSM offers

  • an interdisciplinary curriculum designed and taught by Temple faculty and clinical experts in alignment with the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Exam
  • business and work skills applicable to both academia and industry, and
  • hands-on clinical training.

With the opportunity to gain clinical experience at Fox Chase Cancer Center, the Medical Dosimetry PSM helps position you to find rewarding careers with competitive salaries at major medical centers in industrial or academic settings.

Career Opportunities

The complex nature of cancer disease involves multiple treatment modalities, with surgery, medical oncology and radiation oncology among the most common. As part of radiation oncology, medical dosimetry is a continuously growing and rapidly evolving field.

The projected medical dosimetry job growth rate is 6% from 2018 to 2028. There is a continuous nationwide shortage of medical dosimetrists, creating a critical need for dedicated medical professionals to provide skilled care for those battling cancer.

Program Format & Curriculum

Classes for the Medical Dosimetry PSM are held on Temple’s Main Campus. The advanced, career-focused curriculum, designed for students with a BA or BS degree in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) or related fields requires 30 credit hours of coursework and can be completed in two years. Classes are a blend of lecture, lab and seminar courses and include the following.

  • Physics of Medical Imaging I and II
  • Ionizing Radiation on Living Systems
  • Human Anatomy
  • Medical Dosimetry I and II

Students must also successfully complete a final capstone project before graduating that provides valuable clinical experience outside the classroom and will cover real-world problems commonly experienced in the field. Students in the Medical Dosimetry PSM program will complete this project at Fox Chase Cancer Center.
