List of Writing-Intensive Courses

The course number and Required Course Indicator (RCI) of Writing-Intensive courses are important indicators of Core credit.

The courses on this list have numbers that begin with W or H and a Required Course Indicator of WI. This means that they meet the Core requirement for Writing-Intensive courses.

Other Writing-Intensive courses, not on this list, also meet one or two other Core requirements. Their numbers begin with X (Core and Writing Intensive), R (Studies in Race and Writing Intensive), or H (Honors), and they are included in the lists of courses approved for each Core area. They carry one of these Required Course Indicators (RCI):

·        the RCI of the Core area they are in

·        WR (Writing Intensive and Studies in Race)

·        XA (The Arts, Studies in Race, and Writing Intensive)

·        XC (American Culture, Studies in Race, and Writing Intensive)

·        XN (Individual and Society, Studies in Race, and Writing Intensive)

·        XS (International Studies, Studies in Race, and Writing Intensive).

Please note that non-Writing Intensive versions of Writing Intensive courses may also be offered. They have the same course number and name as the Writing Intensive course, but their number does not start with "W," they have not been designed to be writing-intensive, and they do not carry Core Writing Intensive credit.

Courses that are underlined in this list are designated departmental writing capstones. A writing capstone course is required in each academic major. If more than one capstone is listed here for a department, students in that major should consult their academic adviser about the appropriate course(s) for them.

Courses in italics are no longer taught but still carry Core Writing-Intensive credit for students who have taken them.
This is a comprehensive list of all approved Writing-Intensive courses--they are not all offered each semester.
